Ram Gopal Varma's Sarkar is his "personal tribute" to Francis Ford Coppola's classic Hollywood movie 'The Godfather'.
But Sarkar is not a copy of 'The Godfather'. Rather, the movie is Ramu's own adaptation of the Mario Puzo novel on which Coppola's movie was based.
In the movie Amitabh Bachchan plays an autocratic character Subhash Nagare. Contrary to speculations, the character is not an underworld don but a man who holds tremendous authority over people because of his 'pragmatic
wisdom' and because of his own ways of dispensing justice outside the realms of law.
Kay Kay Menon plays his elder son Vishnu who endorses his father in his justice-through-crime business. Abhishek Bachchan plays the younger son Shankar, who returns to the family after studying abroad. Supriya Pathak plays Bachchan's wife. Rukhsar plays Kay Kay's wife.
Shankar (Abhishek) doesn't have any dream of joining his patriarch father's way. But then a sudden twist of events suck him into an unending whirlpool of crime from which there is no coming back.
Katrina Kaif plays Abhishek's love interest and Tanisha plays the girl Abhi's mother wants him to marry.
