'Elaan' Hackneyed story with predictable ending

Five unlikely heroes come together to bring a don to justice. The plot of Vikram Bhatt’s movie Elaan is simply hackneyed and riddled with corny dialogues and forgettable music.

The film, starring Arjun Rampal, John Abraham, Rahul Khanna, Lara Dutta and Amisha Patel, marks the return of Mithun Chakraborty to Hindi cinema. Mithun plays a negative role in the film.

Mithun

plays an international gangster Baba Sikander, a notorious don who extorts money from rich people, peddles drugs and gets people killed with a mere batting of eyelid.

Indian businessman Kantilal Shah refuses to pander to Baba’s extortion demand and ends up losing his life. Shah’s son Karan (Rahul) decides to bring Baba to the book of law. He realizes that he cannot take on Baba alone so he ropes in ex-cop Arjun (Arjun Rampal) to lead the mission.

Arjun is a former cop who loved his work and excelled in it, till he lost his wife in a deadly crossfire. He was forced to give up his job. But try as he might, he cannot give up his love for his country. Formidable fighting skills and a cop’s unerring instincts make Arjun a lethal weapon. He can sense danger even before he sees it.

Arjun ropes in Abhimanyu, a petty criminal who graduated from a car driver to a drug dealer. Abhimanyu is languishing in jails because he wanted to straighten his life but was betrayed by his boss Baba Sikander. Abhimanyu has the inside knowledge of the enemy’s hideouts and most importantly, the enemy’s psyche. He is the modern day Abhimanyu who will lead the way in to the chakravyuh.

And there is Priya (Amisha), an intrepid and enterprising TV reporter, who will stop at nothing to get a sensational story for her channel. She has a fascination for the enigmatic Karan and her desire to break the story of the century. She also has knowledge of satellite tracking system. So she joins the squad along with Sonia (Lara), Abhimanyu's dancer girlfriend.

Thereafter our five unlikely heroes tighten their noose around Baba Sikander and the outcome is quite predictable.

John Abraham and Arjun Rampal make Elaan watchable. John looks dashing in his rugged outlook and tapori lingo and delivers an excellent performance. Arjun stands in equal stead with his restrained but acute performance.

Rahul Khanna looks oddly cast while Amisha Patel slips well in the skin of her character. Lara Dutta is admirable. Mithun Chakraborty disappoints in his comeback performance.

On the whole, Elaan is a movie that offers nothing new in terms of story, action or romance. Its clichéd story with predictable ending doesn’t arouse any interest in a viewer.
