'Rok Sako To Rok Lo' A campus caper for teenagers

Professor Arindam Choudhari’s directorial debut Rok Sako To Rok Lo is a campus caper with a predictable story about rivalry between two groups of students from different social and economic backgrounds.

In a way, the movie is Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander unspooled once again through the characters that are not only poorly conceived but also enacted shoddily.

It

may seem in bad taste that some newcomers are being flaked for incompetence in their maiden venture. But an objective view by a fledgling critic like me might insinuate to many like-wise youngsters that in the film industry perseverance and self-improvement are two qualities more important that ambition.

So, no matter how ambitious the newcomers of Rok Sako To Rok Lo may be, they still have a long way to go before they can get even a firm foothold in the tinsel town.

As for director Arindam Choudhari, he is a respected man in academic fields (being a management guru, economist, and dean of the Indian Institute for Planning and Management), but he needs to be original in his films rather than simply ripping off an already successful youth film like Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander.

And now the film’s story:

Dev (Yash Pandit), Suhana (Manjari), Ganguly, Bhajji, Venky and Rati are close buddies studying together at Bharti School. They are often looked down upon and ridiculed by another group of rich lads – Ranveer (Carran Kapur) and his sycophant friends.

Ranveer is the undisputed champion from the Valley High School. He flaunts his money and excels over Dev and his friends in every which way.

Then enters into the story a Good Samaritan Kabir (Sunny Deol) who sports bandanas and rides power bikes. In some incomprehensible way, this man becomes an inspiration for Dev and his group. He also makes Dev realize the importance of reciprocating someone’s love and affection.

As Kabir motivates these kids before moving on with his life, an inspired Dev readies for the ultimate test that will prove his capabilities and dismantle the egos of high flying Ranveer and his gang.

Hero Yash Pandit has a chocolate boy looks and cannot play a mature role. He doesn’t have any screen presence either. Much better is Manjari who looks comfortable and plays her role with remarkable ease and conviction.

Sunny Deol is simply intolerable – dressed like a stud as if he is walking the catwalk. And his dancing skills haven’t improved a notch over the years and his acting is still as limited as the days when he got his National award.

Rok Sako To Rok Lo is a movie that will appeal to kids and school-going teenagers.
