'Vishwa Thulasi' Lost Love Rekindled

It boasts of a star cast that includes the likes of Mammootty, Nandita Das and Sukumari. The music has been handled by maestros M S Viswanathan and Ilayaraja. Despite these plus points, Vishwa Thulasi fails to strike a responsive chord. Why?

Well, it is not difficult to divine the reason. A weak script has undone the good work of the actors, music directors and the cameraman. The script is simply insipid and does great injustice to the galaxy of stars who struggle in vain to infuse life into the film.

The

heroine Thulasi (Nandita Das) returns to her village after almost two decades to take up the job of a music teacher in the local school. There, she runs into her lover Vishwa (Mammootty). The meeting rekindles memories of the bygone years. Vishwa also realizes that the passage of time has not cooled his passion for Thulasi.

But the path of reunion is anything but smooth. Enter the villain, Thulasi's cousin Shiva (Manoj K Jain), who harbors a pathological hatred for Vishwa. The rest of the story deals with the stresses and strains the lovers have to undergo before the denouement.

One would have expected an actor Mammootty's caliber to rise to great histrionic heights in a role that offers him immense possibilities. But, the Mega star of Malayalam silver screen, sort of sleepwalks through the role. It was as if his heart was not in the job at hand. The passion and intensity the role requires to convey are simply not there. And that is a tragedy.

Nandita Das makes a brave attempt to redeem the film, but succeeds only partially. Das looks good, buttressed by some excellent shots from the cameraman B Kannan. But that is simply not enough.

In the event, director Sumathy Ram's maiden effort falls through despite the presence of the essential ingredients. The final product fails to animate the filmgoers.

Disappointing.
