'Vaada' Love, jealousy, deceit and murder

It is good to see that some filmmakers in Bollywood are dabbling in new themes and trying different genres. Satish Kaushik-directed movie Vaada is a gripping murder mystery supported by brilliant performances by Arjun Rampal and Zayed Khan.

Despite its unassuming title, Vaada leaves an impact because it doesn’t resort to the Bollywood stereotype of song-dance-romance.

Moving

between flashbacks and current situations, the movie tells the story of a happily married couple Rahul and Pooja whose life is turned topsy-turvy after a car accident in which Rahul loses his eyesight.

The two get their life back on track and Rahul goes abroad for a business trip where he meets a young and energetic Karan who impresses Rahul with his flamboyance and business acumen. An impressed Rahul asks Karan to join his company.

When Pooja sees Rahul with Karan, she is left speechless. Karan is her ex-boyfriend. While she has conveniently forgotten Karan and wants to stay loyal to her husband, Karan still feels the flame of love for Pooja.

An obsessive lover by nature, Karan makes his advances. Rahul cannot see, but he can sense too much.

And, then one day, Pooja is killed and the usual suspects are none other than Rahul and Karan. But can a blind man kill his own wife…

Vaada is not without its share of flaws. For instance, the cops in the movie are shown as buffoons. The story may have had more impact if there was an acute, intelligent cop investigating the murder. Secondly, too many twists in the tale wag a viewer’s attention from one subplot to another.

Despite these cons, the movie still makes an impact thanks to the good performances by Arjun and Zayed. The scenes and sequences between the two are the high points of the movie.

Arjun Rampal gives a mature performance with his restrained portrayal of blind man with sharp senses. Zayed Khan overacts in few scenes in which he has to show his possessiveness for Pooja.

Amisha Patel simply disappoints. She looks flat throughout the first half and doesn’t have much footage after interval.

On the whole, Vaada makes for a paisa vasool viewing. The movie begins at an electric pace and sucks a viewer in the whirlpool of mysteries until the interval point. The pace slackens a bit in the second half, but the courtroom sequences and the final stroke (when Arjun goes to meet Zayed in the prison) is the pinnacle of this fare.
