Produced by SRK’s production company Red Chillies Entertainment, the film is directed by Amol Palekar, winner of many national awards.
The film has Rani playing a village girl. She is married to a man who is only interested in money. On the day of their wedding, her husband leaves for an important business. However, when he fails to return home after a long time,
he is presumed dead by the villagers.
Shahrukh plays the ghost who falls in love with Rani's character. He takes on her husband's appearance and enters her life. The lovelorn beauty finds love, caring and tenderness in her husband's apparition.
Five years later, the husband returns home. The villagers and relatives are bewildered to see him. Now arise many dilemmas in the mind of the character played by Rani. She has to choose between the ghost's eternal love and her husband’s ephemeral affection
