'Maine Pyar Kyon Kiya' Entertainment Unlimited

Kitsch and wit are balanced evenly in David Dhawan’s comic caper Maine Pyar Kyon Kiya. With a story that is marked with hilarious situations and amazing performances from the likes of Salman Khan, Sohail Khan, Arshad Warsi and Sushmita Sen, Maine Pyar Kyon Kiya promises entertainment unlimited. Add to this Katrina Kaif’s breezing charm and David Dhawan’s trademark style of spicing slapstick comedy with funny love story.

A lovesick doctor mends broken bones and invents lies to cover up his lack of commitment in relationships with his female patients. And then he invents new lies to cover up the old ones. Samir (Salman), the “haddiyon ka doctor” can’t resist women, but can’t commit to them either. Every one of his infatuations is supported by a well-crafted lie that he is married.

But

then, lightening crashes and enters Sonia (Katrina), a sexy model with suicidal tendencies. Quite a combination! This peculiar, cute-looking woman does to Samir what others failed to do. Samir falls in love. But Sonia’s love is not without its conditions.

She wants to meet Samir’s wife. So Samir presents his receptionist-cum-nurse Naina (Sushmita) as his make-believe wife. But then Sonia wants to see Naina’s supposed boyfriend. To play the beau of his make-believe wife, Samir brings in his friend Vickey (Arshad).

But there is no end to Sonia’s inquisitiveness. She wants to meet Samir’s “children”, his “mother” and his friends. Samir keeps on heaping lie upon lie.

And then there is Pyaare (Sohail Khan), jo sabki maare. He is Sonia’s slapstick, Mr. Bombastic neighbor who is no less smitten with her. He grabs by beard any and every chance or excuse to be close to her. And he is hell bent on pulling Samir’s leg in front of her. An equal contender for Sonia’s hand, Pyaare is a potential threat to Samir. He can blow his cover.

The cobweb of Samir’s lies grows thicker with Sonia’s growing inquisition. Things get chaotic and confusing to such an extent that Samir holds his head and clamors – “Maine Pyar KYUN!!! Kiya”.

The best thing about Dhawan’s comedy is that it doesn’t make you regret the absence of logic in story. On the contrary, you enjoy the lack of rationale and the hilarious kitsch that you just can’t help laughing at. Maine Pyar Kyon Kiya is replete with such moments.

The sequences involving Salman, Katrina and Sohail are among the most enjoyable. The two guys are always pulling each other’s leg to show the other one down in front of the girl. In other parts, Salman, Sush and Arshad bring the house down with their impeccable comedy.

Salman and Sohail are the main pillars of this movie. While Salman’s comic flair is a common knowledge, it is Sohail – mostly seen in brooding, brawny roles – who springs a surprise by showing for the first time his aptitude to tickle the funny bone.

Arshad Warsi lives upto his reputation of an ace comedian. Sushmita Sen is impressive. Bina Kak (as Salman’s mother who slaps first and talks later) is a revelation. Katrina Kaif shows remarkable improvement. She is no longer just the cute-bland face with few expressions. Although she is the main catalyst for comedy in this film and doesn’t do comedy herself, she breezes through her role with commendable ease.

In short, Maine Pyar Kyon Kiya has all the ingredients that make a funny entertainer. It has a hilarious story replete with ample doses of sidesplitting humor. It has funky music that gels well with the movie’s theme. And it has a sweet surprise in the climax – a cameo by the third Khan brother, Arbaaz.

Worth a watch.
