'Amuthe' A Big Disappointment

Belying all hype and expectations, Amuthe, directed by S.Ezhil, comes as a big disappointment.

The sense of letdown is all the more pronounced as Ezhil had carved a niche for himself with candyfloss romances like Thullatha Manamum Thullum and Poovellam Un Vaasam.

But in Amuthe, the talented director slips up badly, damaging in the process his well-earned reputation.

The biggest drawback of the movie is the story – rather the lack of it! The theme is as ridiculous as it is unbelievable. It not only strains one’s credulity but also borders on the absurd. One wonders why Ezhil attempted such an irritatingly inane film.

Nancy (Madhumita) and Dinakar (Jai Akash) are starry-eyed lovers awaiting fruition of their romance. But fate has willed otherwise. So, Nancy ends up marrying Victor (Prakash Raj) and Dinakar ties the knot with cousin Vinaya (Uma).

However, the lovers are unable to reconcile themselves to the collapse of their dream world. They are determined to change it. So, they decide on a divorce, after much deliberation.

Then unfolds the utterly unbelievable twist in the tale. The spouses of both, ‘moved’ by their plight, decide to lend a helping hand in realising their goal of reunion! For sheer absurdity, it is hard to beat.

The remainder of the film – a waste of precious celluloid – dwells on how the whole thing collapses like a house of cards. A denouement devoid of logic or rationality.

Director Ezhil has lost his surety of touch in Amuthe. He simply does not appear to know the kind of denouement he wants. So it lurches from one absurdity to another till it becomes a bit too much to bear for the audience.

The only silver lining is good performances from Madhumita as Nancy and Prakash Raj as the husband. Madhumita succeeds in conveying the anguish of a thwarted lover. Equally convincing is Prakash Raj as the husband who wants to do a good turn to his wife.

However, Jai Akash is a total failure as the lover. Akash, who is supposed to be one of the most promising actors in the making, looks totally out of place and disinterested in the proceedings.

The music by Sunil Zavier is as below par as the movie itself.

Verdict: Avoid it.
