'Kasak' Avoidable

By Nitika Desai

Director Rajiv Babbar’s movie Kasak is a sure shot debacle in the waiting. Not only is the film a very shoddy rehash of Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski's masterpiece ‘White’, it is also a testimony to the gross lack of acting talent in singer-actor(?) Lucky Ali.

The way the story is treated and put on the screen by Rajiv Babbar (known for his masala movies with Mithun) makes one believe as if one was watching a staid and outdated movie from the 80s.

There

is nothing emotionally stirring in Kasak to call it a romantic flick. Lucky Ali’s portrayal of a lovelorn hero is pretty plain. A few selective expressions cover the face of this singer in his 40s, making one wonder if he has inherited any acting genes from his illustrious father, Mehmood, who could say much even without speaking.

Kasak tells the story of Amar (Lucky), a simple man who is nursing his diabetic mother. His mother’s health deteriorates and she passes away.

Amar takes up a job as a male nurse in a diabetic center where he meets Anjali (Meera), a beautiful woman with big ambitions in life. Amar and Anjali get to know each other and a bond is formed.

Then, in a fortunate twist of fate, Amar inherits good wealth from a rich patient. Amar, being hopelessly in love with Anjali, marries her and gives her his entire wealth.

It is after inheriting Amar’s riches Anjali begins to show her true colours. Without a second thought she dumps him, leaving him heartbroken and dejected.

A good number of reels are then devoted to Amar pining for Anjali. He approaches her time and again, only to be rebuffed.

Then, in yet another twist of fate, Amar gets a job as the bodyguard of an influential man, Captain (Puneet Issar). Lady luck seems to be too generous on Amar as he becomes rich again after a crucial land deal.

A rich Amar once again approaches Anjali. This time she agrees to meet him. But there is a surprise waiting...

The way Rajiv Babbar tells the story makes Kasak a very predictable and monotonous fare. The sparks between Amar and Anjali are there for the first half an hour only. And then a good deal of footage is wasted on the jilted Amar trying hard to win his love back again. Even the climax, which is intended to surprise you, brings nothing more than a yawn.

Lucky Ali should better stick to doing what he is good at – singing. Acting is not his cup of tea. He fails to bring out the intensity, the longing for love in his portrayal of Amar.

Meera is in urgent need to spruce up her dialogue delivery. She manages to give right expressions at times, but when she opens her mouth, the words come out in funny pronunciations. She speaks Hindi in a very conscious way and her English pronunciations leave too much to be desired.

The music of Kasak, by M M Kreem, provides a little respite from the drab and monotonous proceedings on the screen. The song Jaana Hai is the best of the lot.

In short, Kasak is a shoddily made film with poor acting performances and sloppy direction.

Avoidable.
