'Amrithdhare' A Touching Tale

Amrithdhare has a Unique Selling Point: a guest appearance from Amitabh Bachchan. Well, the Shahenshah of Bollywood essays a cameo.

Storywise, it is old wine in new bottle. But director Chandrashekhar has tried to be different in treatment. It is this directorial daring that has saved the film from degenerating into utter mediocrity.

Besides,

it comes as a whiff of fresh air in a cinemascape saturated with action films! One must thank one’s stars for such small mercies!

Puru (Dhyan) and Amritha (Ramya) are a couple deeply in love with each other. It is a case of opposite poles attracting. Puru is everything that Amritha is not! The boy is religious and tight-fisted in money matters. His only ambition in life: to construct a house. Amritha likes to splurge and is an atheist.

In the course of time, Puru realises his ambition, and names the dream house as Amrithadhare – a birthday gift to his beloved wife. Everything is hunky dory in their small world.

But fate springs an unpleasant surprise on them. Amritha is diagnosed as having brain cancer, and the doctor tells Puru that her days are numbered! A shocked Puru decides to make her remaining days as happy as possible. He takes her on a Bharat darshan. In the process, Amritha realises a long-standing wish of hers too: to meet her favourite actor Amitabh Bachchan in Mumbai.

Ramya walks away with the acting honours. In what can be termed as one of her best performances, the lovely actress acquits herself well in a demanding role. One moment she is a moody wife only to change into a lively woman in a jiffy. The mood swings and the utter despair of a person awaiting death have been effectively emoted by Ramya. Dhyan is a perfect foil matching Ramya in frame after frame.

Mano Murthy’s music is as usual topclass. The song “Mane Katti Nodu” stands out for its sheer pathos.

Special mention must be made of Krishnakumar’s camera. It is a feast for the eyes as the young couple crisscross India – from Kanyakumari in the south to Ladakh in the North and Mumbai in West, among other places.

A refreshing change from the run-of-the mill action movies that litter the Kannada cinema.
