Mr. Ya Miss review
'Mr. Ya Miss' Better To MissBy Aparajita GhoshFilm critic, ApunKaChoice.Com Gosh! The promos of a movie can sometimes be so deceptive. What looks like a sure-shot laugh riot in promos can sometimes turn out to be a lackluster phut on the big screen. Antara Mali’s ‘gender bender’ Mr Ya Miss is a good story gone wrong due to flimsy writing and sloppy direction. The
But for a few stray sequences, the humour doesn’t work. Antara’s act of a woman with a compulsive grimace, overblown swagger, disheveled mane and a manly-body language just fails to make you laugh. It only becomes a drag after a while. ‘Mr Ya Miss’ tells the story of Sanjay (Aftab Shivdasani), an advertising executive. A womanizer with scant regard for the courtesy that the fairer sex deserves, Sanjay loves to admire women. His gesture of admiration – a high-toned whistle whenever a stunner passes him by. He goes out with several women at the same time. His friend Shekhar (Ritesh Deshmukh) wonders at the ease with which Sanjay is able to have his way with girls. One day, Sanjay’s girlfriends come to know of his many affairs. Beware a woman’s fury – it is said. True indeed in Sanjay’s case as one of his girlfriends hits him hard and he dies. Up in the heavens, Sanjay pleads with Lord Shiva and Parvati for another chance to live. The gods heed his request but decide that Sanjay ought to repent for his philandering ways and learn some lessons about what it means to live like a woman. So, Sanjay is reborn as Sanjana (Antara Mali). It is here the potential of some real comedy lies in the story. But Antara doesn’t manage to tap it. Sanjana is like a man in a woman’s body. She walks like a man, sits like a man, with her legs outstretched rather than crossed. Out of habit, she often walks into men’s loo to take the leak. She is clumsy with high heels and low-necks. Working in the office as Sanjay’s stepsister, Sanjana becomes the center of everyone’s attention. Men make passes at her on the road. Flirts and Romeos whistle past her, casting amorous glances. Clients and colleagues in the office are more interested in admiring her body than her work. And most of all, Shekhar (Ritesh), Sanjay’s good friend, falls for her. Many crazy and nonsensical situations arise out of this gender confusion of Sanjana. She is accused of Sanjay’s murder. She even ends up in the bed with Shekhar. The climax of the movie comes as a jaw-dropping surprise. You realize that all this brouhaha was just for a fig. Antara Mali falters in the writing department. The movie just doesn’t have a taut screenplay to keep you glued. The dialogues are at many times puerile and the situations (intended to be humorous) look forcibly created. The first half-an-hour of the movie is interesting. Aftab looks really charming and hilarious in his brief stint. When Antara Mali makes an entrance, you brace up for some real comedy. But her confused-gender act fails to evoke mirth. She overacts and after a while her comic act becomes a drag. There are indeed few good moments in the film – for instance, those involving Antara’s office client, and those with Ritesh Deshmukh. But these stray flashes of good humour don’t redeem the movie. Ritesh Deshmukh, our last hope for humour in this otherwise tepid fare, acquits himself despite the fact that his role could definitely have been a meatier one. In short, ‘Mr Ya Miss’ can be missed.
