Risk review
'Risk' Good in parts onlyBy Nikhil KumarFilm critic, ApunKaChoice.Com Vishram Sawant sure has a talent for direction, but not for picking fresh subjects. His previous movie D was based on Mumbai underworld. His latest movie ‘Risk’ is only a little different in subject. This time, Sawant approaches somewhat same subject from the perspective of a cop who is out to eradicate crime and eliminate gangsters. The protagonist of ‘Risk’ has a striking resemblance to real-life encounter specialist Daya Nayak, who was inspiration for Shimit Amin’s movie Ab Tak Chhappan . In ‘Risk’, actor Randeep Hooda is shown as an honest cop who doesn’t even flinch while gunning down criminals. He even has a moustache and short hair like Nayak. Despite
‘Risk’ tells the story of an honest and dutiful cop Suryakant (Randeep Hooda). The brave Suryakant takes on the gangsters and criminals in an unrelenting way. He guns down the baddies in cold-bloodied encounters. But in doing so he offends some influential people who wish to see him out of service. Suryakant is put behind bars. At this point, Bangkok-based don Khalid aka Bhaijaan (Vinod Khanna) comes to his rescue. Suryakant makes his move. He becomes Khalid’s trusted man to eliminate his archrival. But Suryakant has a bigger game in his mind. One by one, he begins bumping off Khalid’s men (his brother and his henchman). He even guns down a corrupt minister. As the movie approaches its climax, the battle-lines are clearly drawn between Khalid and Suryakant. While on the one hand, Khalid’s empire begins to crumble, on the other Surya loses too much in bargain. No doubt, ‘Risk’ is a gripping movie in parts, but its plot remains predictable for the most part. For instance, it doesn’t take a genius to foresee that Suryakant will succeed in his mission against Khalid but would also lose much in the process. In spite of the film’s hackneyed subject, Vishram Sawant deserves a word of praise for having presented the story in an engaging way. Twists and developments in the story at regular intervals keep the viewers’ interest from waning. On top of it, Randeep Hooda really suits the role of Suryakant. The actor breathes out a simmering intensity, and instills gravity in his character. He is frugal with words and speaks mostly through his glances. A noteworthy performance indeed. Tanushree Dutta is in the movie just for the sake of having a heroine for the hero. Her role is half-baked and her song ‘Hichki’ is no great shakes. Vinod Khanna delivers a superb performance as a don who treats even his enemies with respect. The veteran’s acting is very natural and it hardly seems that he is enacting a part. Seema Biswas has a small role and she hardly gets any scene to show her histrionics. Others like Makrand Deshpande, Zakir Hussain and Anant Jog are average. ‘Risk’ is like an old wine repackaged in a new bottle. The film hardly offers anything that we have already not seen on the silver screen. Copyright 2008 ApunKaChoice.com. All rights reserved. |
