‘Mahasamudram’ can lay claim to two firsts. It is the first time that Malayalam megastar Mohanlal plays a fisherman. Then, ‘Mahasamudram’ is one of the last films of Kollywood actress Laila who got married recently.
In the movie directed by S. Janardhanan, Mohanlal is Isahak, the fisherman, who marries his lover Devi. For a change, they tie the knot and spend their first night at sea!
But then, it is not a case of they lived happily after that. The marital bliss is rudely disrupted on the first night itself when Devi (Laila) is arrested on a charge of murder.
Years later, on their fifth wedding anniversary, Isahak learns that Devi is to be released on parole. Isahak, who in the meantime had strayed from the straight path owing to the problems encountered in his life, is thrilled at the prospect of a reunion with wife dear.
Veteran Innocent plays Isahak’s insane father while Jagathy Sreekumar is a priest in whom Isahak confides. Others in the cast are Rajan P. Dev, Siddique, Biju Menon, Indrans and Sai Kumar.
Incidentally, ‘Mahasamudram’ is the directorial debut of S. Janardhanan. The shooting is being done at Vizhinjam and Alappuzha seashores in Kerala.
M. Jaichandran has composed music to the lyrics penned by Kaithapram and BR Prasad.
