'Fiza' Brimming with fizz

After a dream debut in ‘Kaho Na Pyar Hai’, which had the nation raving about his charisma, Hrithik Roshan has taken on an entirely different challenge in ‘Fiza’.

So it is for Karishma Kapoor who plays the pivotal role in the movie. Accompanying the duo in the lead roles is the peerless Jaya Bachchan.

‘Fiza’

is the directorial debut of critic-turned-director Khalid Mohammad, who has also written the story and screenplay of the film. Film’s music, composed by Anu Malik-- with A.R. Rahman composing a prayer ‘Piya Haji Ali’ – has already received an overwhelming response and is already on the top of several music charts. Gulzar, Sameer, Shaukat Ali and Tejpaul Kaur have chipped in with their share of lyrical contribution.

The film also has newcomers Bikram Saluja and Isha Koppikar making their debut, while Neha (the Kareeb girl) makes her second coming as Hrithik’s love interest. Asha Sachdev and Johny Lever appear in light-hearted roles.

The film is about a young Muslim girl, Fiza (Karishma Kapoor) in search of her brother who has been missing for nearly six years. Amaan (Hrithik Roshan), Fiza’s younger brother disappeared during the communal riots of 1992-93 in Mumbai. The heart-broken mother and the lonesome sister only have Amaan’s memories to live with. But the hope that Amaan would return kept them going.

Clinging to this hope, Fiza and her mother, move to city and begin to search for Amaan. Despite being a girl, Fiza is determined to fight against all odds in order to trace her brother. In her endeavor she is helped by Anirudh (Bikram Saluja), her college friend who harbors a soft corner for her.

On the other hand, Amaan is no longer the man he used to be. Years of struggle and hardship has whittled away his innocence. He has become a hardened man who doesn’t mind using the wrong means to achieve his ends. The only respite is his lover Shehnaaz (Neha).

Will Fiza’s search for her brother finally succeed? Will the despondent Nishatbi, who is surviving only on the hope of finding back her lost son, be reunited with Amaan?

Fiza has some really commendable performances. While Hrithik lives up to the standards he had set for himself after his mega-hit debut, Karishma is beginning to show signs of maturity. Jaya Bachchan, needless to say, stands out with a captivating performance.

A highlight of the film is Hrithik’s taandav sequence, beautifully choreographed by Saroj Khan and emphatically shot by the noted cinematographer Santosh Sivan. Hrithik, he of the beefcake physique, doffs his shirt on this particular sequence and sways breathtakingly to Saroj Khan’s baton. Then there is a song ‘Ghungroo Toot Gaye’ in which Karishma’s agility is quite commendable.

Sushmita Sen makes a guest appearance for a dance number ‘Mujhe Mast Mahaul Mein’ which is choreographed by Ganesh Hegde. Shah Rukh Khan was supposed to make a special song appearance in the film. But as the film became too lengthy and went upto 3 hrs 15 minutes, the song was chopped off and so was Amitabh Bachchan’s cameo appearance.

In a nutshell, Fiza has all the ingredients of a good movie – emotional drama, light-hearted comedy, action, romance and beautifully picturised songs.
