'Kalvanin Kadhali' - A masala fare

‘Kalvanin Kadhali’ has no pretensions to being a class movie. It is one of those typical masala movies that come out of Kollywood these days. There is nothing innovative about it. But, surprisingly, it is doing reasonably well where it matters: at the box office.

Director Tamilvaanan has served up a fare that targets the young audience. SJ Suryah has contributed his bit to the joint venture by hamming his way through the role and indulging in the usual song and dance routine. In a way ‘Kalvanin Kadhali’ is an extension of his earlier flicks like ‘New’ and ‘Aa Aah’.

The

Tamilvaanan recipe proved successful in his earlier venture ‘Gokulathil Seethai’. He seems to be in for a repeat performance in ‘Kalvanin Kadhali’.

Of course, heroine Nayanthara has done an excellent job in the movie. She was supposed to look glamorous, and reveals her anatomical assets with characteristic gusto.

Incidentally, Nayan is riding high both in Kollywood as well as in Tollywood with the success of ‘Lakshmi’ and now ‘Kalvanin Kadhali’. So what if the film is short on logic. It is long on entertainment. And the Tamil audience is lapping it up.

An essential ingredient for a good opening in Kollywood nowadays is dialogue that titillates. ‘Kalvanin Kadhali’ has an overdose of that. Suryah fans will no doubt freak out on this ribald stuff!

The story is weak, so is characterization and narration. Sathya (played by Suryah) is a Casanova. The son of a businessman (Pyramid Natarajan), Sathya is a go-getter in the matter of women. His philosophy is simple: romance a woman, have sex and say goodbye.

But our Don Juan does meet his match in Haritha (Nayanthara). And he develops an instant liking for her. So he goes about the task of impressing her with the help of his friends (Vivek, Ganja Karuppu and others).

Persistence pays. Haritha falls for his 'charms'. But she would not cross the limits. A frustrated Sathya decides to give up on her.

Blissfully unaware of his intent, Haritha tells her parents that she wants to marry him and manages to get their consent. A cornered Sathya makes a clean breast to Haritha : that he has no intention to marry her. All that he wants is casual sex! He, in fact, asks her to stop loving him. But by now Haritha is well and truly in love. So she would not buy the idea.

Sathya then seeks the help of a girl whom he had used to talk Haritha out of her love for him. The plot then undergoes a bizarre change. Now Sathya starts loving Haritha even as she decides on a parting of ways! The climax is predictable.

There is nothing much to write home about the acting. Suryah is improving with each movie. But his dialogue delivery continues to be awkward. Nayanthara, as required of the role, looks stunningly beautiful. She has proved she can act too.

Vivek's comedy, for a change, is tolerable.

Yuvan's music has become immensely popular. "Eno Kangal..." and "Uyir Piriyum Valiya..." have become chart-busters. Ekambaram has cranked an efficient camera.

‘Kalvanin Kadhali’ is strictly for Suryah fans. Others can give it the widest possible berth!
