'Thuruppu Gulan' An Engaging Entertainer

Are you a Mammootty fan? If the answer is in the affirmative, you will like his ‘Thuruppu Gulan’ immensely.

‘Thuruppu Gulan’ also reinforces what Rajamanikyam proved without any shadow of doubt : that Mammootty can handle comedy too effectively. Another myth about Mammootty that ‘Thuruppu Gulan’ blows sky-high is that he can’t dance for nuts. The film boasts of a number of peppy songs to which the mega hero shakes his leg with a newfound confidence! He seems to have completely overcome the earlier aversion to dancing.

in all, ‘Thuruppu Gulan’ is a film made-to-order for his fans. All that goes into a typical Mammootty film are there : action, comedy, emotion, drama, and what not! No wonder, the fans are beating a record path to theatres showing ‘Thuruppu Gulan’.

The film’s director Johnny Antony can also derive satisfaction from his work. After all, in his first flick with the mega star, Antony has succeeded in fashioning a film that caters to the palate of not only Mammootty fans but others as well.

The best thing about ‘Thuruppu Gulan’ is that it has no pretensions to being a serious movie. The intent is clearly to entertain. And the film is eminently successful in that mission. You leave the theatre in a happy-go-lucky frame of mind after watching the movie made under the commercial masala format.

Gulan has drawn liberally from the David Dhawan-directed Bollywood flick ‘Dulhe Raja’. Of course, the director and the scriptwriters Udayakrishnan and Sibi Thomas have ‘Malayalamised’ it to suit the Kerala audience!

Gulan Kunjumon (Mammootty) is an ace card player who runs a thattukada (wayside eatery) in Kozhikode. He is an avid fan of a comic character called Malayavi in the children’s magazine, Balarama. He is a toughie and do-gooder rolled into one.

His father (Innocent) runs an identical joint near a five-star hotel in far-away Kochi. Envious of the popularity of the joint, the five-star managers try to evict him. That is when Kunjumon enters the scene with a mission to save his father and teach the five-star bigwigs a lesson in the process.

That he does it in style. The film unspools the manner in which he goes about the chosen task.

In between, Lakshmi (Sneha), the daughter of the hotel owner (Devan) falls in love with Kunjumon. The climax is of course all too predictable.

But then, who cares! Mega star Mammootty carries the film on his broad shoulders single-handedly. It is a Mammootty show all the way. The supporting cast comprising Jagathy Sreekumar, Harisri Ashokan and Salim Kumar, plays the second fiddle competently.

The ‘Sultana of smiles’ Sneha has nothing much to do except appear beautiful in fancy clothes and act coy.

Alex Paul’s music meshes well with the mood of levity that animates the movie.

Verdict : ‘Thuruppu Gulan’ is meant for those who are inclined to let their hair down and have a nice time. An engaging entertainer enriched by a masterly performance from Mammootty.
