'Shootout At Lokhandwala'

A real life incident has been put on celluloid by director Apoorva Lakhia in his movie ‘Shootout At Lokhandwala’.

The film is a thriller boasting of an impressive cast ensemble consisting of Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Vivek Oberoi, Tusshar Kapoor, Arbaaz Khan, Sunil Shetty, Rohit Roy, Neha Dhupia and Dia Mirza.

Produced under the banner of Sanjay Dutt and Sanjay Gupta’s White Feather Films, ‘Shootout At Lokhandwala’ is based on one of the most long and drawn out encounters in the history of Mumbai police. It is a stark and realistic recreation of the Lokhandwala shootout of 1991, in which underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s henchmen were killed by cops.

“What everyone saw was real. What no one saw was the truth,” goes the tagline of this film.

Story:

On a normal summer day in 1991 at Mumbai’s sprawling Lokhandwala complex, five criminals hide inside a flat, counting a huge sum of Rs 70 lakh. Among them are Maya Dolas (Vivek Oberoi) and Dilip Buva (Tusshar Kapoor), two of Dawood Ibrahim’s henchmen.

Within minutes the place is surrounded by as many as 286 policemen led by ACP Aftab Ahmed Khan (Sanjay Dutt).

Holed in the flat, but armed to their teeth, the criminals are left with no other option but to fight. Maya Dolas and Dilip Buva are cold-blooded killers who wouldn’t give up without a fight.

What follows is a long encounter between police and criminals in which the western suburb of Mumbai is transformed into a virtual war zone.

The film has Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Sunil Shetty and Arbaaz Khan playing cops. Abhishek plays the cop who triggers off the whole incident. Interestingly, the film doesn’t have Amitabh and Abhishek sharing the screen space.

Sanjay Dutt’s character is pivotal to the plot. ACP Khan is depicted as a relentless cop who showed immense guts to engage the trigger-happy gangsters for hours. The irony is that Khan later faced inquisition from his own department. He was also charged for violation of human rights during the encounter.

‘Shootout At Lokhandwala’ promises to be a gripping tale of two individuals (ACP Khan and gangster Maya) who are very similar in some ways but fight on the opposite sides. It is also a story of the courage shown by a number of policemen who risked their lives to nab or kill the dangerous criminals.

The film will feature some heart-stopping action sequences.

The movie is set to release in April 2007.
