'Sivaji'

A frisson of excitement courses through the Tamil film world with the release of superstar Rajnikant’s ‘Sivaji’ less than three weeks away.

The pre-release hype and hoopla have reached its zenith. The streets in Tamil Nadu are awash with billboards and posters of the film, and lakhs of Rajnikant fans are literally straining at the leash.

The reason for their impatience: two postponements of the release of their favourite hero’s film on technical grounds!

Unless there is another postponement, ‘Sivaji’ is slated to see the

light of the day on June 15.

The costliest film to be made in Tamil cinema, ‘Sivaji’ took more than a year to make. Shootings were done in Hyderabad, Pune in India and USA and Spain abroad.

‘Sivaji’ also marks the coming together of three titans: super star Rajnikant, ‘super’ director Shankar and ‘super’ composer A R Rahman .

In fact, Rahman has composed some delightful tunes for the movie. Two of the songs “Shana” and “Ballelakka” have already become chart busters.

The tight veil of secrecy over the story has only deepened the mystique of the movie, which will be released in neighboring Kerala and Japan, too. Rajnikanth is immensely popular in the Land of the Rising Sun.

For heroine Shriya who attracted attention with Mazhai , it is a dream come true – acting in a Rajni film, that is. And the saucy heroine is pretty excited about it all.

Others in the cast include Prakash Raj, Suman, Manivannan. The comedy department will be handled by Vivek, who is said to have done a quality job in the film, according to the grapevine. It is a comeback of sorts for Suman, who is back after a big gap.

The ‘Sivaji’ team boasts a few more big talents like cinematographer K V Anand, editor Anthony, art director Thotta Tharani, writer Sujatha, choreographers Raju Sundaram, Lawrence and Brinda, and costume designer Manish Malhotra .

Director Shankar believes in doing it different. So, ‘Sivaji’ will feature Rajnikant in a variety of hairstyles. As a result, a younger and smarter Rajnikant will strut the silver screen flaunting his characteristic mannerisms.

Such is the awe and aura built around ‘Sivaji’ that a few other actors like Ajith and Vikram have put off the release of their films to avoid being blown away by the ‘Rajni storm’! The fan frenzy is going to be particularly high because ‘Sivaji’ is releasing two years after Rajni’s previous flick Chandramukhi .

So, then, June 15 is the D-Day. The whole of Tamil Nadu is waiting with bated breath for the unfolding of the Rajni blockbuster.
