'Thimiru' Good in parts

The Tarun Gopi-directed Thimiru is a curate’s egg – good in parts. You might say, it flatters only to deceive.

A brilliant first half punctuated with good comedy, dance numbers, melodious songs and racy narration tapers off into a predictable climax. It was as if the director ran out of ideas as the film progressed.

Whatever

the box office appeal of the movie, it has put Bollywood heroine Reema Sen firmly into the top five bracket in Kollywood. With Thimiru, Reema, who has been cooling her heels in the sidelines as it were, has put herself on the centerstage.

Hero Vishal also comes of age in Thimiru. He has, in a way, taken off from where he left off in his earlier action thriller Sandaikozhi. Vishal shows a lot of promise with his tough physique and body language in Thimiru.

Another riveting performance has come from Shreya Reddy as the foul-mouthed villain.

The film unspools with gangsters out to get the hero Vishal, a medical student. The locale is Madurai, a city in Tamil Nadu. Ganesh (Vishal) an ordinary youngman, morphes into a one-man fighter vanquishing single-handedly all the baddies in the process. You have seen it all before. The only difference is that the director has infused life into the role of the protagonists. That makes Thimiru eminently watchable. If only the director had not lost concentration and focus in the second half, Thimiru would have qualified to be called a taut thriller in the mould of Firoze Khan’s Hindi movie Qurbani .

Ganesh joins Madurai medical college as a final year student. Under police protection, Ganesh stays in hostel warden (Vadivel)’s room. In the college he runs into Shrimathi (Reema Sen), daughter of his professor. She promptly falls in love with him after Ganesh saves her from goons who want to kill her. She proceeds to do, as is required of well-endowed Tamil heroines, the usual song and dance numbers with verve and style.

Of course, Ganesh has a dark past. His life changes when he meets Easwari (Shreya Reddy). Sister of Periya Karuppu (Manoj K.Jayan) and Chinna Karuppu (I.M.Vijayan) moneylenders and local goondas, Easwari is a vixen who wants to marry Ganesh, who beats her up in public. She has Ganesh’s parents kidnapped. She would release them only if Ganesh marries her! Ganesh saves his parents. But in the melee, Easwari gets electrocuted.

In her deathbed, she tells her brothers to see that Ganesh and his girl friend are killed. How Ganesh fends off the bunch of villains and wins the hand of fair Reema forms the rest of the story.

With Thimiru, Vishal can be said to have emerged a full-fledged action hero like Vijay , Surya and Jeeva . Director Tarun Gopi has made a neatly packaged masala movie. With a little more imagination, he could have turned it into a slick flick. Alas, that was not to be and the film peters out into a tame end.

Special mention must be made of the action scenes conceived and executed by Kanal Kannan. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music is another plus point of Thimiru.

Though Reema Sen and Shreya have measured up to their roles, Manoj K Jayan and IM Vijayan look pedestrian, the result of poor characterization. Vadivelu impresses with his special brand of comedy. Priyan’s camera work is outstanding, too.

A watchable masala entertainer.
