Sillunu Oru Kadhal review
'Sillunu Oru Kadhal' Watch it for Jyothika and SuryaBy P. SreekumaranFilm critic, ApunKaChoice.Com Debutant director Krishna’s ‘Sillunu Oru Kadhal’ has a lot to commend itself. It is a slickly made love tale. Could have been slicker with a bit of tighter editing. Still, the success of the flick is it reaches out to you, setting on a walk down the memory lane, as it were. Now
Kundavi (Jyothika) is a college student who believes in love marriages. But she ends up marrying engineer Gautham (Surya) chosen by her parents. Fast-forward it. Now, the couple are in Mumbai. They have a five-year-old daughter, Aishu. Everything is hunky dory till the day Kundavi chances to read her husband’s diary while he was out on a business trip to New York. The diary provides Kundavi a peep into Gautham’s past. The flashback. An engineering college student, Gautham falls in love with Aishwarya (Bhoomika), the daughter of a local MP and businessman. They decide on a registered marriage. Gautham ties the tali, too. But the happiness is short-lived as Aishwarya’s father bashes him up and takes the daughter away. Kundavi is well and truly shocked at this glimpse into her husband’s past. But she feigns ignorance. The devoted wife has now a mission on hand : to fulfil Gautham’s wish to live with Aishwarya at least one day! She finds Aishwarya who is based in Australia. The girl still regards Gautham as her husband. Kundavi takes her back to India and home. She coolly tells an astounded Gautham that he can spend a day with Aishwarya! What happens then? That is for you to see. So go and watch ‘Sillunu Oru Kadhal’. The major drawback of the film is its script which strains your credulity. It is a bit difficult to believe that Gautham settles down to a married life with Kundavi just like that. No enquiries whatsoever are made about Aishwarya! Again, you can’t digest the ungrudging manner in which the wife goes about trying to gratify her husband’s wish to spend a day with his lover! For once, the comedy act of Vadivelu and company gets on your nerves. His antics stick out like a sore thumb. The saving grace is A.R. Rahman’s music. “Maja Maja” and “New York Nagaram” are the pick of the lot. It is Jyothika’s film all the way. She is in her elements, and has got under the skin of her role, well. Needless to say that the intimate love scenes with her fiancé are natural and ‘eyeful’. Surya surprises you with a convincing performance as the lover first and husband, later. But, Bhoomika is a bit of a letdown. She looks disinterested in the proceedings. In the ultimate analysis, ‘Sillunu Oru Kadhal’ is watchable because it is the last film of Surya and Jyothika as the lovers! Copyright 2008 ApunKaChoice.com. All rights reserved. |
