'Varalaaru' Ajit rocks in this average film

There is nothing historic about ‘Varalaaru’ (history). It is an average film enhanced by a brilliant performance from hero Ajit. It is Ajit’s finest hour, from the performance point of view.

Ajit carries the film single-handedly. Surprisingly, veteran KS Ravikumar’s direction is, to say the least, indifferent. May be, he felt let down by a weak script. But still, the surety of touch expected of a master director like him is missing.

Neither

the story nor the narration can boast of any novelty. It is ground traversed much too frequently. Even AR Rahman’s music is pedestrian.

If the film is doing well at the box office despite all these handicaps, it is due to a masterly performance from Ajit. In a triple role – father and two sons – Ajit has infused energy and passion into the role that is as surprising as it is welcome.

Here is the story. Shivshankar (Ajit) is a business magnate and dotes on his only son Vishnu (Ajit). The father is confined to a wheel chair because of an accident in which his wife (Kanika) is killed. Son Vishnu is an easygoing chap who is happy to spend his time in the company of his buddies (Ramesh Kanna, Suman Shetty).

Vishnu’s life undergoes a drastic change after he meets college student Divya (Asin) in a village. They fall in love and the marriage is also fixed.

Then comes the twist in the tale. All of a sudden, Vishnu starts having psychic problems and goes to the extent of trying to shoot his own father. He is admitted to a mental hospital.

Then comes the revelation that all that was the handiwork of Jeeva (Ajit), a Vishnu look-alike who wants to take revenge against Shivashankar. Why? That is the suspense kept till the very end!

Asin has essayed her role with finesse and élan. She excels in the comedy scenes with a perfect sense of timing. Kanika is adequate. Comedy acts of Ramesh Kanna and Suman Shetty are forgettable and at times irritating.

You can watch ‘Varalaaru’ just for Ajit’s delightful essaying of a triple role.
