'Kayyoppu' - An Engrossing Film

Are you a lover of quality cinema? If the answer is in the affirmative, you will immensely enjoy the Ranjith-directed ‘Kayyoppu’ (Signature).

You have to give it to the director and megastar Mammootty. They have teamed up to dish out quality fare to the discerning cinemagoers.

‘Kayyoppu’

bears the signature of two of the master craftsmen in the profession. And a welcome addition to the genre of serious films.

What endears ‘Kayyoppu’ to you is the no-nonsense approach of the director and an authentic interpretation of the protagonist’s angst by Mammootty.

‘Kayyoppu’ is a film that again taps into the immense talent of megastar Mammootty. Coming as it does in the wake of ‘Karuthapakshikal’ and ‘Palunku’, ‘Kayyoppu’ bears the stamp of quality and serious cinema. One hopes the film clicks at the box office as well.

Even if it does not, Ranjith and Mammootty can draw comfort from the fact that they have contributed their mite to enriching serious cinema in Malayalam.

The film leaves you disturbed and sets you thinking about the agonies and ecstasies that animate human life.

Balachandran (Mammootty) is an accountant by profession. But he is a lover of books. Books are his world. And his room in a lodge is crammed with, what else, books. He is held in high esteem even by noted writers including Vasudevan (Nedumudi Venu).

A small incident proves a turning point for Balachandran. At a public function, Vasudevan raptures over an unfinished novel, which happened to be written by Balachandran. A publisher, Sivadasan (Mukesh) who was present on the occasion, persuades Balachandran to finish the book so that he can publish it.

But the writer in Balachandran runs into the ‘Writer’s Block’. And finds himself unable to write.

Padma (Khushboo), Balachandran’s college mate enters his life at this point. Padma, a divorcee, loves literature and is also a fan of Balachandran. She manages to contact Balachandran. And once again, life takes a new turn for the hero. What happens then is best left unsaid.

All that needs to be said is that it is a disturbing climax that shocks you out of your sense of complacency.

Mammootty proves, if proof were needed, that when it comes to essaying serious roles, he is brilliant. Khushboo gives a good account of herself.

Mukesh’s Sivadasan, Nedumudi Venu’s Vasudevan do full justice to their roles.

‘Kayyoppu’ is enhanced by top-class cinematography of Manoj Pillai, editing by Bina Paul and art-direction by Sabu Ram.

Music director Manikanth has succeeded in meshing his music with the mood of the film.

A must-watch for lovers of serious cinema.
