'Pori' A letdown

Director Subramaniam Siva had made a promising start with his maiden venture ‘Thiruda Thirudi’. The racy flick went down well with the audience.

However, his second project, ‘Pori’, is a big letdown. The lack of directorial innovation is compounded by a poor script.

Both

veteran actor Nagesh and hero Jeeva valiantly try to elevate the film to a high level. But their efforts do not succeed, thanks to the absence of an efficient backup in terms of direction, story and music.

It is a pity that ‘Pori’ peters out into mediocrity. With a little imagination the film could have become better. But that was not to be.

Even the music by Dhina is nothing to write home about. The picturisation of the songs was also unimaginative. The introductory song is a repeat from Jeeva’s earlier movie, ‘E’.

Hari (Jeeva) runs a pavement bookshop to eke out a living. His father (Nagesh), an honest school teacher who has retired, buys his son a bookshop with his Provident Fund money. Jeeva names the bookshop after Periyar and runs it with the help of his buddy Karunas.

The love angle develops in the meantime. Hari meets Pooja (Pooja), a TV journalist, and falls instantly in love with the girl.

Trouble erupts in the form of a Singapore-based businessman (Seeman) who evicts Hari from the bookshop, saying that the place belongs to him.

When Hari discovers that his upright father had been cheated by a land mafia gang, he launches a one-man mission to avenge his father’s humiliation.

His enquiries reveal that Nama Shivayam of Vinayagam real estates is the villain of the piece. How Hari makes the villain pay for his wrongdoing forms the remainder of the story.

Jeeva and Nagesh try their level best to infuse some life into the proceedings. But in vain. Pooja looks pretty. That is all. Unfortunately for her, the director has not fleshed out her character well.

‘Pori’, to put it bluntly, is avoidable.
