Getting wild on the dance floor

If techno flavored music blended with the elements of bhangra and Indian folk turns you on, then the music album of Karan Johar’s Kaal is very much meant for you.

The album has a good punch of dance numbers and their remixes are replete with awe-inspiring sound effects that create the feel of being in wilderness. And why not? The movie is set in the Jim Corbett national park and is based on the theme of Tiger preservation.

The film, jointly produced by Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan, stars Vivek Oberoi, John Abraham, Ajay Devgan, Esha Deol and Lara Dutta in the leading roles. Directed by newcomer Soham, the movie has music by Salim-Sulaiman and Hindi lyrics by Shabbir Ahmed. Jeanne writes for the English snippets in between.

The album opens on a foot-savvy note with Tauba Tauba, a catchy number sung by Sonu Nigam, Kunal Ganjawala, Sunidhi Chauhan and Richa Sharma. Parallel to the Hindi rendition in the song there follows a very hummable rap number by Bob and his chorus group.

The upbeat mood is retained in the second number Kaal Dhamaal which is an item number shot on Shahrukh and Malaika Arora. Singer Kunal Ganjawala impresses with his high-pitched voice while other singers Ravi Khote, Caralisa and Salim support him well. The album also has ‘The Tiger Mix’ of the same number with musical arrangements by Bobby Friction and The Infinite Scale.

The next number Nassa Nassa, composed by Anand Raj Anand is a delectable mix of western and bhangra tunes. But it is the following number, Ankhiyan Teriya Ve, that impresses you with its indomitable energy. The song, written and sung by Kailash Kher, has an element of sufi music blended in western style.

The additional punch to the album is provided by the two remixes – ‘The Jungle Mix’ and ‘Dharma Mix’.

While the former is an instrument piece set in the wilderness of a jungle, the latter is more like a tribute to the famous tunes of Karan Johar’s previous flicks.

Overall, Kaal is a punchy score that will appeal to the young people.
