- Raw and Edgy

The music of ‘Tashan’ is a potent and pungent cocktail of desi and videsi.

After their cheesy compositions in Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Om Shanti Om’, composer duo Vishal and Shekhar come up with a grungy score in ‘Tashan’. The music in the songs is intrinsically rugged and earthy, and the tempo pulsating. Grooving in perfectly are lyrics that range from wacky to mildly sensible.

Among the outstanding songs is “Dil Haara”, which has Sukhwinder Singh showing his vocal skills to the hilt. The song, heavy on beats and electric guitars, picks up pace in the end with a jamming session.

“Dil Dance Maare” has an addictive riff that you like in the first hearing. The song, essentially a desi dance track sung by Sukhwinder Singh, Sunidhi Chauhan, Udit Narayan, has everything from dhols, dholki, guitar to harmonium.

“Chhaliya” arguably is the most forgettable song of the album. Sung by Sunidhi Chauhan, it is a medium-paced track with continuously changing rhythm.

“Falak Tak” is a light-hearted, feel-good romantic duet by the ever-dependable Udit Narayan and Mahalaxmi Iyer. With the tempo of a chugging train, the song romps on to some jarring notes of a lead guitar, nicely fused with lilting sounds of the santoor and flute.

“Tashan Mein” is the most powerful song of the album. It has a bluesy feel that blends seamlessly with a qawwali-like fervour as the song goes up and down in its mood. Spirited singing by Saleem and Vishal brings a lot of vim and vigour to this title track.

Music and songs aside, the film’s actors give two-line renditions about the Tashan quotients of their characters – Bachchan Pande (Akshay Kumar), Pooja (Kareena Kapoor), Jimmy (Saif Ali Khan) and Bhaiyyaji (Anil Kapoor). The most appealing of the lot is “Bachchan Pande ka Tashan”.

The music album of ‘Tashan’ stands apart because of its ostentatious sounds, its edgy melodies, and its raw rhythms.
