Album Review
- Somber in mood
By Usha Lakra

Madhur Bhandarkar’s another reality-check movie ‘Fashion’ is an insight to the Fashion world. It’s a mega budget film by Bhandarkar, starring Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut and newcomers Mugdha Godse and Arjan Bajwa.

The music is not bad and some tracks are doing well on the charts. It is by Salim-Suleiman, the back-ground score expert music director duo. Lyrics are written by Irfan Siddiqui and Sandeep Nath.

The first song you will hear is ‘Jalwa – Fashion Ka Jalwa’. It’s a title track sung very well by Sukhwinder Singh, who is supported by another set of singers, Satya Hinduja and Robert "Bob" Omulo. The song describes the theme of ‘Fashion’ well, with word Jalwa signifying glitz and glamour of the fashion world. Lyrics are well-written with good music. A hip-hop number with heavy beats and very much a contemporary Bollywoodish track. The remix of ‘Jalwa’ is a groovy number.

The next offering is ‘Mar Jawaan’, which starts in a very impressive way in Arabic, sung by Salim Merchant. It’s a slow, romantic number with a dab of Sufi music. The singer is Shruti Pathak who will surprise you with her soulful rendition. It’s one of the best tracks in the album. A chart-topper definitely, with very complementary lyrics – “Soche dil ki aisa kash ho…Tujhko ek nazar meri talash ho”.

The club remix of this number is a lovely lounge track and can leave you intoxicated.

Then comes ‘Kuchh Khaas’, again a sensuous number, vocalized by Mohit Chauhan and Channel V Viva girl Neha Bhasin. Both of them have done justice to the song, though Neha got a chance like this quite late. But never mind, she has rendered the song in right mood. The lyrics of the song are again very romantic : “Alfaz chup se hain nashe main khoye…”

The remix version is not that impressive. It seems more of an album-filler.

The track after ‘Kuchh Khas’ is ‘Aashiyana’ – soft rock number with some peppy beats sung by Salim Merchant. Lyrics give you the feeling that the whole world belongs to you. A number which can set your spirits high. The remix appears better than the original one.

The album concludes with ‘Theme of Fashion’. The instrumental is very impressive with the use of santoor in the beginning and then the heavy beats come to surface, very apt for the changing fast world of fashion.

‘Theme of Fashion’ – remix version is a soft rock track with a typical discotheque appeal.

Overall, the album promises you a good change, as the last few releases were really bad in terms of music. ‘Fashion’ music appears more like a thematic music, but has got mass appeal. The music of this Madhur Bhandarkar movie is different from the rest of his movies.
