A full-on masala movie based on the war of genders spearheaded by Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor, magnum opus ‘Kambakkht Ishq’ forges a sangam between Bollywood and Hollywood. Producer Sajid Nadiadwala has roped in international stars Sylvester Stallone, Denise Richards and Brandon Routh for the movie.

It’s been really long since we heard Anu Malik’s music. He tries his best to churn out good Bollywood music for ‘Kambakkht Ishq’ and has more or less succeeded. Lyricists are RDB, Anvita Dutt Guptan and director Sabbir Khan. The album has altogether eleven songs, five are original and four are remixes.

The album kick starts with ‘Om Mangalam’ where Sanskrit chants get hip-hop punch. The track is composed and crooned by RDB with a few inputs from Anu Malik. A pacy track, ‘Om Mangalam’ is a hit score and the use of words kambakkht ishq in the lyrics makes the song sound like the title track. That’s why the song is a perfect choice for the promotion of the film. Om Mangalam reprise is a good remix of the original, with right use of EDM (electro dance music).

‘Lakh Lakh’ sounds like any Punjabi song in a Bollywood film. Neeraj Sridhar has sung it with energy as well as style. Lyrics are not poetic to stir your heart but are sheer fun. For instance: “Mere jaisa hi tujhe jachega kamina.” The song’s ‘Electro Dhol Remix’ sounds better because of bhangra beats. You will start doing balle-balle.

Alisha Chinai’s voice is just apt for a song like ‘Bebo’. Who else can sing better for the diva Kareena Kapoor. The track is composed exclusively for Kareena. Though ‘Bebo’ lovers would love the song, Anu Malik could have tried to make it better. ‘Bebo Club Mix’ remix is unlike the original. It’s a mast foot-tapping score.

Song ‘Kambakkht Ishq’ fails to live up to the billing of a title number. The song has an average melody and a heavy beat that makes you run for the headache pill. The only relief is KK and Sunidhi Chauhan’s voice for the song. But in some parts, the track loses its melody and becomes a bit earsplitting. However, the lyrics are full of mock humour that leaves you in splits. The remix version is an average rehash. The only variation is because of the use of rap.

The album has only one romantic number and that’s ‘Kyun’ , vocalized by Shreya Ghosal and Shaan. The song unexpectedly soothes you with its sweet melody. Anu Malik has a good history of romantic numbers, this track indeed affirms his musical skills. There is also a female version of Kyun in the album, without any changes.

‘Welcome to Hollywood’ is an English number that introduces a listener to Hollywood where the movie is mostly shot. Anushka Manchanda and Karsh Kale have done an excellent job in delivering this track.

Well, the songs of ‘Kambakkht Ishq’ will make you jive with its vim and vigour and smile with its contemporary lyrics. Just don’t use your brain while listening to tracks, just chill as the songs offer you a good variety of music with typical Bollywood nachna-gana .

But the compilation does not meet up to the expectations. The feel that ‘something is missing’ is evident. And it happens rarely in an album that remixes sound better than the original and just give you the feeling – let’s dance.
