Album Review Unusual by Bollywood standards By N K Deoshi
Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar has quite an unusual musical score compared to Bollywood standards. Music director Vishal does not associate himself with too many projects, and is known to spring pleasant surprises. 'Dil Pe..' is another one of his musical treats.
The movie is Hansal Mehta's maiden directorial attempt at the turnstiles. Manoj Bajpai and Tabu pair together in this movie with an unconventional story and ear catching music. And songwriter Abbas Tyrewalla's supple lyrics gel well with Vishal's caressing melodies.
The title song 'Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar' is undoubtedly the most impressive of the lot. Asha Bhonsle (in her inimitable style) renders the song in the teasing tone of Abbas Tyrewalla's lyrics. Abbas gives a mumbaiiya touch to his words in ' Chal padi', which is a roller coaster ride for the singers Suresh Wadekar and Roop Kumar Rathod. The tempo of the song and the spirit in which it is rendered provokes a bit of foot tapping on the part of listeners.
Udit Narayan and Kavita Krishnamoorthi share the microphone on 'Jee jee'-- a delightful song about a couple planning their married life. Hariharan, however, comes up with a rather mundane 'Swagatam', which carries a patriotic tone.
Abhijeet and Kavita Krishnamoorthi open the flipside with 'Paagal', which carries the hangover of Vishal's earlier composition 'Kallu Mama'. The composer than deftly blends the modern drum beats with Hindustani classical music in the endearing 'Lai ja re badra', beautifully rendered by Sanjeev Abhayankar.
Then follows 'Haule haule', a slow, soft and scintillating jazzy number sung by Indipop artist K K. The song has some lingering lyrics by Abbas.
The album closes with the remix version of 'Chal padi'. The remix number is too loud and does not stand anywhere close to the original version.
