Nothing to sing home about

Abhishek Bachchan may not have had his dream entry into Bollywood, but the star kid has little to fret.

His next film, Raj Kanwar’s Dhai Akshar Prem Ke co-starring Aishwarya Rai, commands considerable pull at the box-office.

Going by the title of the film, one expects its music to ooze romance. But it is not so. Jatin and Lalit have given a very north Indian flavor to their music without falling into the trap of Indipop gimmickry and digitally generated sounds. For a change, Sameer too has tried to infuse some meaning into his words.

The title song, ‘Dhai Akshar Prem Ke’, rendered by Anuradha Paudwal and Babul Supriyo is the most impressive of the lot. The album has three sad versions of this song.

Anuradha Paudwal sounds quite unemotional in ‘Do Lafzon Mein’ which lyricist Bhairov Arun has written quite impressively. Then there is this racy number called ‘Koi Taza Hawa’ in which Babul Supriyo does his best to bring some vigor and spirit to his vocals, however, with little success. ‘O Mere Rabba’ is slow in tempo and has Anuradha Paudwal sharing it with Kay Kay who goes high pitch in his nasal falsetto.

The flipside opens with folksy and foot tapping ‘Mera Mahi Bada Sona Hai’ beautifully rendered by Anuradha Paudwal. The song has Small B giving his vocal chords a try. The song ‘Ek Haseen Ladki’ is a mishmash of evergreen oldies like ‘Ek Ladki Bheeghi Bhagi Si’ and ‘Leke Pehla Pehla Pyar’. Babul Supriyo tries to imitate Kishore Kumar while Sudesh Bhosle sounds his usual self.

‘Ye Sama Ye Nazare’ is melodious and has good lyrics. The album closes with racy ‘Hai Deewana Yeh Ishq Mera’ in which Paudwal’s voice is stifled by too much orchestration.

Music directors Jatin-Lalit have retained simplicity in their music and have refrained from giving it a western touch. Anuradha Paudwal and Babul Supriyo dominate the album but fail to deliver anything extraordinary. Overall Dhai Akshar's music score is different but unimpressive.
