Old wine in a new bottle

After Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega, the Salman Khan-Rani Mukherjee-Preity Zinta trio is all set to bill and coo in Abbas Mastan’s next offering “Chori Chori Chupke Chupke”. The music for the film is churned by Anu Malik and Sameer has penned the lyrics.

Now originality is something that is conspicuous in Anu’s scores by its absence. Often one merely gets a re-arrangement of the chord progressions from his earlier melodies, or a cacophonous farrago of tidbits pilfered from old tunes. In other words nothing fresh and mellifluous should be expected from his music in the first place to save oneself from the disappointment.

The title song “Chori Chori ..”opens the album with a sentimental note but soon drools into vacuous rendering by Alka Yagnik and Babul Supriyo. Lyricist Anaam touches a few heartstrings in “Dhekhne Walon Ne”. But the flow of the song, however, is punctuated by Anu’s crass transposition from one melody-line into another.

Jaspinder Narula then completely overshadows chocolate boy Sonu Nigam with her spirited, full-of-gusto rendition of the Punjabi pop number “No. 1 Punjabi”. Oozing with oomph is “Diwani Diwani” in which Anaida’s raunchy interjections, her provocative oohs and ouchs do kindle some interest.

The flipside-opener “Diwana Hai Ye Man” is a bit promising and is already doing well at the charts. Alka Yagnik then lets her hair hang down and teasingly renders “Love U Love U Bolo” with Anu Malik accompanying her in his sissy-like vocals. The highlight of the album is two songs by Jaspinder Narula – “Mehandi Mehandi” and the wedding song “Dulhan Ghar Aayi”.

Anu has tried to pack the album with all the necessary ingredients that make for a hit score. From the handful of mushy numbers there is a punch of Bhangra Pop and a mehandi song, an obvious presence in the music scores nowadays. In other words no efforts have been spared to make the package lucrative. But all in vain
