Album Review

By N K Deoshi

Here comes a welcome respite from the corny, foot-tapping melodies of Bollywood.

Goldie Behl, an anonymous name, is making his directorial debut with this Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee starrer. So involved is he in the project on the personal level that he has even penned many of the songs himself and is said to have contributed in composing the music too.

Aadesh Shrivastava, who is better known for his racy, pelvic-savvy compositions (befitting an actor like Govinda) has really sprung surprise with his range and command over music. Though at times he has resorted to extensive use of Digital gadgetry he has kept melody at the essence of his compositions.

The album opens with a lilting number “Yeh Hawain” which latches onto your fancy instantly. Beautifully written by Behl and Shyam Raj, the song is soft, has a good melody and is unarguably one of the best compositions in the lot. Aadesh continues the same mood in the following number “Kuch Aisa Jahan” with the sweet voiced Alka Yagnik and the Indipopper Shaan sharing the microphone.

Hema Sardesai and Sukhwinder Singh sound a mite vacuous in “Dil Nasheen” a song with a lot of Arabian tunes thrown here and there in the melody line. Dev Kohli’s words in the song are trite and fail to make any impact. Next number “Chhota Sa Mann Hai” begins slowly – with Alka Yagnik scaling the lows-and-highs of the octave – and transposes into a power packed qawwali. At the backdrop of the song is some good orchestration (embellished with digitally generated sound effect) by the composer.

Sonu Nigam renders “Ganga Maiya” with full gusto. The song carries a rustic feel, has good percussions and melodies that are played on Harmonium. Next number “Kya Hua” begins with gentle plucking of guitar notes and nudges into a peppy juvenile anthem. The song, impressively sung by Alka Yagnik and Shaan, has various moods and its melody line traverses through ups and downs. A shallow-sounding Roop Kumar Rathod passes muster in “Jhoomein Yeh Zameen”, a song for the disciples of Bacchus.

Rating: Good. Worth a try.
