Music has always been a strong point of Subhash Ghai’s films. Be it the melodious Laxmikant-Pyarelal or the techno savvy AR Rahman, Ghai has always extracted the best out of music composers. The same, however, could not be said of the score of his forthcoming movie, the Hrithik Roshan, Kareena-starrer “Yaadein”, music of which has been composed by Anu Malik and lyrics by the old faithful Anand Bakshi.

But for two or three songs, the album has nothing to show. The title song “Yaadein Yaad Aati Hain” undoubtedly is the best the album has to offer. Hariharan’s soft and gentle crooning and Anu Malik’s lilting music (with mellifluous guitar and piano accompaniment) gel beautifully with Anand Bakshi’s poetical lyrics. But its second version, by the pint-sized singer Sunidhi Chauhan and Mahalaxmi Iyer, is a bit of a let down.

Anu fails to tap Asha Bhosle’s vocal prowess in “Jab Dil Miley”, a romantic number that sounds vacuous owing to tepid rendering by Udit Narayan and Sukhwinder. The album then nudges into a jolly mood with “Chamakti Shaam Hai” which sounds similar to “Choli Ke Peeche” from “Khalnayak”. The same mood continues as Kavita Subramaniam, Alka Yagnik and Hema Sardesai share the microphone for “Eli Re Eli”, a feel-good song picturized on Kareena and her two sisters in the film.

Another highlight of the album is “Kuch Saal Pehle”, a nostalgic trip with Hariharan scaling the lows and highs of octave in his honey sweet voice. “Aye Dil”, featuring the new singer Sneha Pant and the Indi popper KK passes muster as does Sukhwinder-Kavita rendered “Chanda Taare”.

Anu Malik, who has been showing signs of maturing with his recent scores for “Rahul” and “Fiza”, has fallen short of giving an album that movie buffs were expecting from him.
