Deewar - Review - Songs - News
Album Review By ApunKaChoice Bureau The music of 'Deewar: Lets Bring Our Heroes Home' dashes the expectations that one had from the movie boasting of a mega star-cast comprising of Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt and Akshaye Khanna and Amrita Rao. Directed by Milan Luthria, this multi-crore patriotic flick is based on a story of 54 prisoners of war on the enemy side and their subsequent escape. The music for the film is given by Aadesh Shrivastava, who has recently been appreciated for his score in 'Baghban'. All songs in 'Deewar' are set to lyrics by Nusrat Badr. The album opens with an Arabic number Marhaba Marhaba that has Sonu Nigam making an affected attempt to quiver his voice, while female singer Xenia Ali too gets to croon in between the edgeways. The song, featuring Sanjay Dutt, has been shot on a lavish set depicting a cave with a number of Ukrainian belly dancers to add some erotic touch. But the melodic beauty is absent in the song, making it forgettable with repeated hearings. 'Chaliye Ve Chaliye' (Vande Mataram) sounds hollow despite the use of strong and patriotic words by Nusrat Badr and the traditional Punjabi folk tune on which the song is based. Udit Narayan is not able to create any patriotic fervor in a listener's heart. Roop Kumar Rathod does a better job but the melodic variations are so predictable and inaptly used that the song only sounds shallow despite best of efforts on the singer's part. Then comes Kara Kaga, a song about separation and longing to meet the beloved one. The song is picturized on a village belle who is awaiting her lover’s return. Sung by Alka Yagnik, the number is quite appealing due to simple music by Aadesh and poetic words by Badr. Todenge Deewar Hum is another patriotic song about the captured soldiers' cry of rebellion to break the walls that imprison then and to go back to their motherland. A short number, the song is mainly sung as a chorus with support from Udit Narayan and Mukul Agarwal. The best song in the album is the Hindustani track Piya Bawri, which is beautifully rendered by Alka Yagnik. In the background, Kailash Kher's classical vocals create a perfect ambience of Hindustani folk. The strength of the song lies in the way Aadesh has incorporated a classical track into a fusion-like number. At the end of the album comes the qawwali Ali Ali. Inspired from a traditional Sufi qawwali, which is like a panegyric for Prophet Mohammad's friend Ali, the modern version of the qawwali has singer Krishna making a lackluster attempt to imitate legendary Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. This song is only meant for selective ears with appreciation for the Sufi way. On the whole, although the music of 'Deewar' has many moods and situational lyrics, the album fails to live upto the expectations. It is not an album that finds a place in one's favorite musical collection. Average. Album Songs User Reviews :Deewar News A 'shaky' Deewar?
