View the Madhoshi picture gallery Read the Madhoshi movie review Album Review By Nitika Desai From a trend that has now been going on for last few years, most of the musical albums of Hindi films have been catering to the stereotypical variety that includes foot-savvy numbers along with a mushy dose of slow romantic tracks, and an ‘inevitable’ item number to boot. The music of debutant director Tanveer Khan’s Madhoshi is no exception. The movie, starring Bipasha Basu, John Abraham and Priyanshu Chatterjee, is the story of a girl who is torn between two men – the first one is the man she loves, and the other - her fiancé, the man who accepted her in her days of despair and depression. The music of the movie, by Roop Kumar Rathod, and the lyrics by Shakeel Azmi, are quite in keeping with the theme of the movie. The need for a foot-savvy number is filled with two different versions of the title song Madhoshi -- a club version and the original version. Composer Roop Kumar sings the song and infuses it with energy by his ‘straight-from-the-heart’ rendition. The album takes you into the mushy mood as Udit Narayan and Sadhna Sargam render O Jaana Jaana, a soft and lilting song with a romantic theme. Later on, a slower and sadder version of this song becomes Chale Bhi Aao, sung by Sonu Nigam. The romantic mood is carried forward by Alka Yagnik in Pyaar Ka Khumar. The song is quite melodious with a free-flowing rhythm. Then comes time for clamor and complaint as composer Rathod takes the mike once again in Aye Khuda and sings a high pitched song about a man complaining to God why he made love. Roop Kumar has tried to bring the emotion of a ‘heart-broken’ man in his voice but he overdoes it sometimes with his not-so-subtle vocal variation. And at last comes the indispensable ‘item number’ as Sukhwinder Singh and Sunidhi Chauhan get going in flow and show their skills to the hilt in Yeh Ishq Hai Gunah. The song has a swinging beat and a nocturnal feel that makes it quite appealing to ears. On the whole, Madhoshi does have a few numbers that may catch the fancy of listeners. Not a bad album to spend your money on.
