Govinda Biography

He is the real and the proverbial Viraar ka chokra, who lived a sizeable part of his life in modest chawls of Mumbai.

Govinda was a gifted dancer and thought that he could get a place beside Mithun Chakraborty in Hindi films. All his earlier films focused on his dancing abilities.

Chi Chi, as he is popularly known, emerged as an actor in Hathya. People noticed the talent in Govinda and he started getting better offers. The shift however came with David Dhawan's Aankhein. Govinda's image went for a complete overhaul.

Till the release of Aankhein not many were aware of this actor's flair for comedy. Govinda never looked back since then. He instituted himself as the actor 'No. 1'.

Brother of former actor Kirti Kumar

He had a narrow escape from death on January 5, 1994. While travelling to a studio for the shooting of 'Khuddar (1994)' , the actor's car hit another car, resulting in him sustaining injuries to his head. Though bleeding profusely, Govinda did not cancel the shooting. After visiting a doctor, he shot for the film till midnight.

Son of Arun and Nirmala Devi

Presently (March 2004) running for office in Bombay (Mumbai) on the Congress party ticket.

Has two children - a daughter and son.

He has acted in over 120 Hindi films.

Govinda played a negative role for the first time in Shikari which was released in 2000. Although the movie was not a commercial success, his convincing portrayal of a villain was critically acclaimed.
