She made documentary films before making a splash in mainstream with a wonderful film on slum children titled Salaam Bombay.

Mira Nair’s films have always run parallel to general commercial cinema, and definitely always made strong social statements.

Mira’s sore point is Kamasutra, a was a well-ventured project but failed to make an impact because it neither dwelt on eroticism nor was placed in a historical perspective. The film was neither here nor there. In short, viewers did not know what to look for in the film.

Mira recovered from the hard blow her expectations from Kamasutra received and quickly winded up her shooting schedule for a film based on North Indian marriages with all its finery and gaiety. Now, Mira has another prestigious project titled Mother’s Recompense lined for her. In this film, Mira directs Hollywood actress Susan Sarandon, who plays the central role in the film. The film’s shooting is expected to begin in April next year.
