Bariwali (The lady of the House), fetched a Best Actress award for Kiron Kher and she can't help talking about it.

''It is a different role from the ones I have done so far,'' Kiron said in a tete-e-tete with the audience at a forum at the International Film Festival of Mumbai recently. ''I enjoyed playing a woman who is less than ordinary, which was very difficult to portray,'' she said while talking about the Banalata role.

The film, produced by her actor husband Anupam Kher, deals with the exploitation of the feelings of a middle-aged spinster by a film director to cut down on his production costs and other needs for shooting his film in her mansion. The film has been screened in other international festivals and was very well appreciated.

''I do not have to prove my progressiveness with the kind of roles that I do and so I do not regret doing this role, too,'' she said in reply to a query. Kiron will next be seen as mother of Paro in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas and a couple of other movies.

Says Anupam, ''I was completely broke while producing the movie but we managed it somehow and now I am the happiest man seeing the response it's getting.'' He is confident the film will do very well commercially as well, since he was interested in getting his investments back, when he releases it next month at Calcutta. He also said that he will try to release it with Hindi subtitles for a larger audience.

''Since I debuted in a role of an old man in Saaransh, I still have to surpass the excellence of that character, I will produce scripts in future which excel Bariwali, he added. He also agreed that he was into direction but refused to divulge further details.
