Looks like controversy and Hussain are made for each other. First the painter's dream film Gajagamini served as a platform for all kinds of jokes revolving around the vagueness of the film.

Finally, when the film is released, Hussain faces another obstacle in the form of protesters trying to disrupt the showing of the film.

It so happened that the eighty plus Hussain flew to Ahmedabad just before the film was to be screened there to paint the film's stills and posters himself. For the uninitiated, Hussain began his artistic career by painting film posters in Mumbai to earn a living.

After all his efforts to give a personal touch to his dream film, Hindu fundamentalists threw the screening of Gajagamini off-gear by slitting Madhuri's throat in the poster, smearing it with black ink and pulling it down.

After a long spell of struggle the painter released the film, only to be pulled down unceremoniously. The protesters are angry with Hussain because they feel he was on the wrong by painting Hindu gods and goddesses in a disrespectful manner.
