Life couldn’t have taken a more unexpected turn for Gracie Singh. She has just acted in a TV soap (Amaanat) and is now looking forward to a career in Bollywood with a debut opposite Aamir Khan in “Lagaan”.
Her homely looks, down-to-the-earth demeanor and no-nonsense attitude strikes you immediately. In fact it is these traits that secured her the role of Gauri, the heroine of Ashutosh Gowarikar-directed “Lagaan”.
The film has proved to be the “turning point” of her life. In the film she plays a simple peasant girl in the village of Champaner, set in 1890s during the British rule.
Born and brought up in Delhi, Gracie had never imagined that she would get to face the camera with her favorite cinestar Aamir Khan one day. She concedes that she couldn’t believe her luck when Ashutosh told her after a couple of auditions that she “was in”.
As for her experience of working with the perfectionist Khan, Gracie is candid to admit that, initially, she was a bit apprehensive with Aamir always keeping her on toes. But later on, when they developed a rapport, Aamir’s presence enabled her to lift her performance .
No doubt “Lagaan” has opened new avenues for Gracie. She is already getting offers from Bollywood producers. But the Delhi lass is cautious not to get slotted in stereotypical roles. As of now, she is keeping her fingers crossed as the film hits the marquee coming Friday.
