Aamir Khan's blockbuster Lagaan edged out Karan Johar's Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham by bagging seven awards at the 2002 International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards held at the Genting Highlands, Malaysia.
Lagaan bagged seven of the thirteen awards including the award for the Best Film and Best Direction and Aamir Khan as Best Actor.
The annual IIFA awards, known as India's answer to the Oscars is the only Indian movie ceremony held abroad.
The other blockbuster Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, which like Lagaan was nominated for 12 of the 13 categories, had to be content with two awards for Jaya Bachchan (Best Supporting Actress) and Sonu Nigam (Best Male Playback singer) for the song 'You are my Soniya'.
Besides Aamir, others who added to Lagaan's awards kitty was Ashutosh Gowariker (Best Direction and Best Story), A R Rahman (Best Music Director), Javed Akhtar (Best Lyrics) and Asha Bhonsle (Best Female Playback Singer for 'Radha Kaise Na Jale').
The remaining four awards in the main category for category excellence went to Tabu (Best Actress in 'Chandni Bar'), Saif Ali Khan (Best Supporting Actor in 'Dil Chahta Hai'), Govinda (Best Performance in a comic role in 'Jodi No 1') and Akshay Kumar (Best Performance in a negative role in 'Ajnabee').
Mira Nair, who won the Golden Lion at the Venice film festival last year for Monsoon Wedding, was honored with a special award for outstanding contribution to international cinema.
Veteran movie producer Yash Chopra and actress Sadhna were also given special awards for their invaluable contribution to Indian cinema.
Amitabh Bachchan, the only Indian film star to be honored with a wax likeness at the Madame Tussauds museum in London, was named Personality of the Year.
Upcoming stars -- model-turned-actors Arjun Rampal and Bipasha Basu and Gracy Singh -- were voted Best New Faces of the Year.
