For many Bollywood actors and actresses, year 2002 scripted engagements, marriages and heartbreaks that doesn’t seem far removed from fiction.
One break-up that hogged the limelight in the Hindi film industry was the split between ‘bratty’ Salman and his long-standing girlfriend Aishwarya Rai. While things had been hotting up between the duo since the beginning of this year, it was only a couple of months ago that their relationship ended formally.
Another split that took everyone by surprise was that between Aamir Khan and his wife of fifteen years Reena. Aamir and Reena, who recently worked together for producing the highly acclaimed Lagaan, are parents to two children.
The news of the wedge between Aamir and Reena started pouring in with the rumors that the perfectionist Khan was dating his Dil Chahta Hai co-star Preity Zinta. While such rumors still haven’t got any credibility so far, what has happened for sure is the end of marriage for Aamir and Reena.
A similar fate was destined for newcomer Vivek Oberoi and his fiancée Gurpreet Gill, who decided to end their engagement of mere four months in December. Vivek, it seems, was keeping a bit too busy in his Bollywood assignments and thus could not take out enough time for Gurpreet who complained that the ‘Road’ boy was ‘ignoring’ her.
Besides these sob stories and heartbreaks, year 2002 also saw a couple of happy endings for some of Bollywood stars.
Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor gave legitimacy to their long-standing relationship by announcing a formal engagement in October at Amitabh Bachchan’s birthday.
On the same day came the announcement of marriage between director Goldie Behl and svelte actress Sonali Bendre.
And, last but not the least, Nandita Das tied the nuptial knot with the Kolkata-based advertisement guru Soumya Sen at a very private ceremony on December 22.
