Ash to play ‘Chhoti Malkin’ in modern Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam

Aishwarya Rai has been officially signed to play the haunting Chhoti Maalkin in a new celluloid version of the 1952 Bimal Dutt classic novel Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam.
The movie, being produced by Pritish Nandy Communications, will be directed by Deepa Mehta (director of acclaimed films like ‘Fire’, ‘Water’ and ‘Bollywood Hollywood’).
It is learnt that Nandy considered several directors including Rituparno Ghosh and Shaad Ali for this most lavish epic-project before zeroing in on Deepa Mehta.
A movie based on the novel was made by Guru Dutt in 1962 with Meena Kumari in the central role.
Ash’s co-stars in the film are yet to be finalized.
