When Aishwarya Rai had signed Chokher Bali, she was apprehensive that Bengali audience may not accept her as the widow Binodini from Tagore’s classic novel.

Ash’s apprehensions have been put to rest by the good run of Rituparno Ghosh-directed movie in Kolkata.

In fact, Ghosh himself was surprised by the response of the audience to the film as he had taken a few creative liberties with Tagore’s work. But the film has been accepted unconditionally. And so has been Ash (who is a non-Bengali) accepted as Binodini, one of Tagore’s women Kolkata is very passionate and possessive about.

“Bengal has accepted me as their Binodini and that makes me feel very good indeed,” says the actress.

Chokher Bali has also won acclaim at Locarno film festival, Toronto film festival and the recently held International Film Festival of India.
