Urmila Matondkar has been doing a variety of roles lately. She was a rape victim in Pinjar , a rebellious daughter in Tehzeeb and a girl deceived by her lover in Ek Hasina Thi. But now the Rangeela girl is all set to do another kind of role.
Urmila will do the lead role in M F Hussain ’s next movie, which is a comedy.
According to Hussain, who made films like films like Gajagamini and the yet-to-be released Meenaxi, “the film (with Urmila) will not be the typical slapstick comedy but will reflect the Indian humour we find in our day-to-day life."
“There is humour everywhere in our country, in the by-lanes, in the kitchen and my film would attempt to capture this aspect,” he says.
Hussain disagreed that the film did not keep with his image of a serious painter. “Humour is a very serious aspect and real humour is when people are brought to tears after a bout of laughter.”
Regarding Urmila in a comic role, he said, “I felt Urmila was the right person. Her body language conveys something very funny. Her face has that kind of expression. I choose an artiste according to the requirement of a film.”
On his current film Meenaxi, he said: “While my earlier film Gajagamini captured the image of a woman through history, my current film revolves around the modern woman while my future film would look at humour through a woman.”
“I prefer to express myself through a woman rather than a man, because a woman, I feel, is an unending source of energy, she is shakti.”
“Meenaxi looks at the dilemma and conflict between a writer and the characters of his or her work," he said. Hussain said Meenaxi tries to capture the various layers revolving around the confrontation between a writer and the characters. “There is a hero within every writer and there are various layers in the relationship that a writer shares with his or her characters, which the film tries to explore.”
“I chose Tabu for the role (in Meenaxi) because I think she suited the character. Earlier, I had chosen Madhuri because her face had the classic look that I was looking for. My next film would have Urmila because she suits the role," Hussain said.
"I do not have a fixation for a star," he said. Interestingly, the painter known to have seen a Madhuri Dixit film several times.
"I am not making a film for the box office," he said in reply to a question on the commercial success of his films. "It is like a concert, where people come and watch it if they like.”
