The year 1973 holds a special place in the lives of mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan and cricket star Sachin Tendulkar.
1973 was the year when Bachchan got his first hit in Zanjeer . The movie paved way for Bachchan’s road to superstardom. Zanjeer, directed by Prakash Mehra , catapulted Bachchan to fame. In the film, he played a strict police officer.
The role, which fetched Bachchan the title ‘The Angry Young Man’, came to him by default. A host of actors like Dharmendra , Dev Anand and Raj Kumar refused to do the role on account of some apprehension. Interestingly, Zanjeer was Bachchan’s 13th film.
Then began a remarkable journey to fame and success. In no time the Indian film industry was declared a ‘One Man Industry’, and Bachchan its undisputed king.
Some time back Bachchan was chosen Superstar of the Millennium, easing out giants like Sir Lawrence Olivier and Charlie Chaplin on a BBC online poll. On January 26, 2001 Bachchan was awarded the Padma Bhushan for his outstanding contributions to Indian Cinema.
Today at the age of 61, Bachchan is not only giving the young stars a run for their money, but is also the brand ambassador for numerous products like Pepsi, ICICI, Sahara, Parker, Dabur, Cadbury’s, Nerolac, Reid and Taylor, Maruti, Emami and Eveready.
It was on this date (24th April) in the year 1973 that Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar was born in Mumbai.
Having made his Test debut at the age of 16 against Pakistan in Karachi, ‘The Master’ hit his first Test hundred at the age of 17 against England at Old Trafford. Now Sachin has more Test centuries (33) and more one-day hundreds (37) than his age. He has scored 22604 runs in both versions of the game.
Today at he age of 31, Sachin is the world’s oldest cricket player and is the first batsman to score 50 hundreds in international cricket. No other international cricketer, who made his debut before Tendulkar did in 1989, is still playing the game.
Bachchan and Sachin have come together in advertisements for Pepsi and also for the campaign against Polio. Bachchan also hosted Sachin on his gameshow Kaun Banega Crorepati.
