SCOOP!! & NEWS Another initiative by Richard Gere: Use art to spread AIDS awareness06th July 2004 20.52 IST By ApunKaChoice Bureau Richard Gere , one of the international film world's most untiring HIV/AIDS awareness activists, is in Delhi for a campaign that aims to use art to spread awareness of the deadly disease. There is a need to increasingly start thinking out of the box when it comes to spreading awareness about AIDS. There have been some sporadic efforts but there's been nothing concerted and sustained. It seems that Richard Gere has vowed to change that. Hollywood's most frequent flyer to Delhi is in town for an interaction on the theme "Make Art Stop AIDS". The purpose of the forum is to introduce the city to the efforts of artistes throughout India who are working to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS. Attending the event will be several leading activists and artistes including Mumbai's Parmeshwar Godrej (who is a trustee of Gere's NGO, Gere Foundation India Trust), Bollywood actor Om Puri and officials from the National AIDS Control Organisation and UNAIDS. The Delhi meet will be the culmination of an intensive four-day workshop currently on in Kolkata for 50 persons in various creative fields. The prime mover behind the event is David Gere, an associate professor in the Department of World Arts and Cultures at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He is the Hollywood star's brother. David is currently in India on a Fulbright scholarship. |
