Munnabhai MBBS gets National Award for best popular film

Sanjay Dutt starrer Munnabhai MBBS got the best popular film providing wholesome entertainment, even as Koi Mil Gaya grabbed three awards including one for the best film on social issues.

Urmila Matondkar starrer Pinjar portraying partition bagged the Nargis Dutt award for best film on National integration, with Manoj Bajpai getting a special jury award for his role as Rashid in the film.

Marathi film 'Shwaas', a moving portrayal of the relationship between a grandfather and a grandson who is about to lose his vision, won the Best Film award while Bengali filmmaker Goutam Ghose bagged the Best Director award for 'Abar Aranye' at the 51st National Film Awards for 2003 announced in New Delhi today.

Tamil actor Vikram picked up the Best Actor award for 'Pithamagan' and Malayalam actress Meera Jasmin won the Best Actress award for 'Padam Onnu Oru Vilapam.'

Best Feature Film awards in different languages were given to 'Raghu Romeo' (Hindi), 'Aakashitorar Kothare' (Assamese), Chokher Bali (Bengali), 'Preethi Prema Pranaya' (Kannada), 'Sabhalam' (Malayalam), 'Not Only Mrs Raut' (Marathi), 'Aw Akkare Aa' (Oriya), 'Eyarkai' (Tamil), 'Aithe' (Telugu) and 'Dance Like a Man' (English).

Pankaj Kapur received the Best Supporting Actor award for his performance as a Mafia don in Maqbool (Hindi) and veteran actress Sharmila Tagore bagged the Best Supporting Actress award for 'Abar Aranye', which won three awards.

The awards were announced by Feature Film Jury Chairman Basu Chatterjee in New Delhi. The awards for Non-Feature Films have been rescheduled to include videoformat films. Kamal Hasan and Hrithik Roshan were among the hot favourites for the award for Best Actor, the Jury Chairman said.
