Three years ago, Mira Nair won the coveted Golden Lion award at the Venice International Film Festival for her movie Monsoon Wedding . This year, her movie ‘Vanity Fair’ is in the competition section.
Celebrities have gathered from around the world for this year’s Venice Film Fest that opened on September 1 and closes on Sept 11. Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie are among the Hollywood stars attending the fest.
Mira Nair, too, is at the festival along with Vanity Fair’s leading actress Reese Witherspoon and other actors. The movie is in the ‘Competition Section’, which means that it may win the second Golden Lion for Mira.
Set in England of 19th century, the movie is based on William Makepeace Thackeray's darkly mesmerizing novel of the same title. In the film Reese plays a seductive, complex and manipulative woman named Becky Sharp, who has had an impoverished childhood. Others in the movie’s cast include Eileen Atkins, Jim Broadbent, Gabriel Byrne and Romola Garai.
The Festival will also feature Mani Ratnam's Yuva (in the Midnight Section) and Gautam Ghose's ‘Impermanence’ (in the Digital Cinema Section).
