Fashion, films, books, charity and a newfound appreciation for paintings are some of the special interests of author Salman Rushdie’s wife Padma Lakshmi .
Padma has been in India for quite some time for a variety of reasons. Firstly, she is doing a photo shoot for the October cover of L’Officiel magazine. Secondly, she has lent her name to UNIFEM projects dealing with issues like domestic violence, rape, and trafficking in women and children.
In fact, Padma has visited a shelter and listened to the horrific tales of the women residents. And she is quite moved by what she has heard from them.
Besides charity, Padma is also developing a genuine appreciation for paintings. Earlier in the week, she visited the Capital and spent a whole day with artist Anjolie Ela Menon, who later also took Padma to her studio, something Anjolie doesn’t do often.
In the meantime, Padma took out time to make an appearance at the preview of an exhibition held to celebrate 20 years of the Apparao Galleries. Hubby Rushdie bought two paintings from the gallery for Padma on her birthday on September 1.
As for films, Padma has plans to act in a movie written by Rushdie. But she would rather not talk about it now.
