Aishwarya Rai will play the leading role in Britain-based filmmaker Gurinder Chadha’s co-production ‘Mistress of Spices’, which is based on a magic realism novel by a California-based Indian writer.
According to reports, ‘Mistress of Spices’ will be a lavish Hollywood production to be directed by Chadha’s husband and co-writer Paul Mayeda Berges. The movie is based on a 1997 novel by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni.
Gurinder Chadha and her husband are in Delhi to promote Bride and Prejudice (starring Ash with New Zealand actor Martin Hendersen ), which is slated to hit the theatres on October 8. The movie is the Indianized adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic ‘Pride and Prejudice’.
Chadha said she has chosen Ash and Anupam Kher for ‘Mistress of Spices’. Berges said that Ash really “fits the role in the film as she has the quality to bring natural and yet exotic beauty to the screen.”
The movie will have Ash playing a young Indian spice seller who runs a grocery shop in the U.S., dishing out condiments for cooking. Besides this, she also doles out counsels for immigrants’ woes of alienation, loneliness and exploitation. But soon, she faces her own traumas when she falls in love with a non-Indian.
